KEY LARGO, FL — Monroe County Mayor Holly Merrill Raschein visited Canal 90 between Hilson and Ivanhoe courts on Key Largo yesterday to view the canal restoration efforts underway.
The restoration work includes backfilling the canal. Backfilling raises the canal bottom to an optimum depth of about 7 feet to allow maximum flushing and tidal flow in and out of the canal. This restoration technique will increase the levels of dissolved oxygen throughout the canal. The work is funded by a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Keys Stewardship grant to the County. “These improvements restore the canal’s impaired waters and bring the dissolved oxygen levels up to meet State water quality standards, which will greatly enhance the levels of marine life in the canals,” said Monroe County Chief Resilience Officer Rhonda Haag. “Residents should see an immediate increase in marine life once the project is completed.” The crew also continuously monitors the canal for manatees that have been seen in the area. Close observation is being kept to ensure their safety, and activity stops if manatees enter the area while restoration work is underway. Additional restoration projects for other poor and fair water quality canals in the Florida Keys will move forward as additional grant funding allows. Canal restoration improves the overall health of canals and nearshore waters. To learn more about canal restoration or see if your canal is included in the County’s restoration plan, visit www.monroecounty-fl.gov/canals. KEY WEST, FL (APRIL 29, 2024) – The interventional cardiac catheterization laboratory at Lower Keys Medical Center has reopened following renovations. The improvements made include upgraded equipment to provide greater clarity for physicians, a new procedure table, and enlarged spaces for patient comfort in pre-procedure and recovery areas. Cardiac catheterization allows a cardiologist and a team of nurses and technicians to examine a patient’s heart and identify problems with heart function using minimally invasive technology. The procedure is used to diagnose and treat patients with stenosis or abnormalities of the heart. Other cardiac procedures offered at Lower Keys Medical Center include electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) and transesophogeal echocardiogram (TEE) to measure the heart's electrical activity and identify muscle damage; and nuclear medicine scans such as myocardial perfusion scans to reveal the structure and blood flow within the heart. Non-invasive imaging technologies including magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), computed tomography angiography (CTA), X-ray and echocardiograms, provide images of the heart muscle, valves, veins and arteries. David Clay, CEO of Lower Keys Medical Center said, “The upgrades and reopening of the cath lab continue our commitment to providing advanced care and services for the residents of the Lower Keys. It also builds upon our designation as a Chest Pain Center, accredited by the American College of Cardiology.” Giovanni Campanile, MD, Medical Director of Cardiology at Lower Keys Medical Center, said, "We are thrilled to have an upgraded cardiac catheterization laboratory and highly qualified interventional cardiologists who are experts in invasive cardiology for the improved treatment of patients in the Lower Keys." Two FAFSA Workshops open to all, not just CFK-bound students KEY WEST, FL, April 26, 2024—In response to ongoing challenges and delays associated with the rollout of the new 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) is helping incoming and returning college students and their families to navigate the new process. Two FAFSA Workshops will be held virtually on Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 p.m. These events are open to all, including individuals who do not plan to attend CFK. Students can sign up for a workshop on the College’s website at CFK.edu/paying-for-college/financial-aid. The FAFSA determines eligibility for various federal aid including Pell Grants, loans, and work-study programs, critical to helping millions of students afford college. It is also required for many other scholarships and aid opportunities.
During the FAFSA Workshops, CFK’s Financial Aid team will walk through the entire FAFSA process, offering tips and strategies to ensure a smooth and successful application. Additionally, they will cover common pitfalls, eligibility requirements, and the various types of financial aid available. To maximize the assistance provided at the workshop, attendees are asked to create a FAFSA account beforehand at FAFSA.gov and to avoid any similar-looking websites without a .gov domain. The new FAFSA is redesigned to be simpler. It is able to better assess students’ financial need but has been fraught with months of delays and system glitches. As a result, many students are still waiting for their application to be processed and many more are delaying or foregoing applying for financial aid or college admission altogether. “We don’t want to see anyone deter their plans to pursue higher education—whether it be at CFK or elsewhere—because of the FAFSA delays,” said Lana Gaspari, CFK Vice President of Advancement. “We understand that students are frustrated. We are using all options to help our students and community access aid and move forward with their plans this fall.” Beyond federal aid, CFK offers other resources to help students pay for college, including scholarships and payment plans. Additionally, the College has not increased tuition in over a decade. Those who cannot attend the FAFSA Workshops are encouraged to contact CFK’s Financial Aid Office at 305-809-3523 or [email protected] for assistance. Overflow camping is limited while dredging project continues KEY WEST, Fla. – On April 25, Dry Tortugas National Park reopened the campground as scheduled after dredging the Fort Jefferson moat and redistributing sand that had built up from several hurricanes. For the safety of park visitors, the campground was closed for 45 days during the use of heavy construction equipment.
The next phase of the project involves dredging the finger piers to restore recreational and park access to the Garden Key waterfront. After the finger piers, the dredging will move to the moat near North Beach. During this time, the project will continue to use the area adjacent to the campground as a staging area, which may limit overflow camping. The dredging work is part of a larger project to restore water flow in the moat and repair Fort Jefferson’s counterscarp (moat wall) damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Ian in 2022. The final phase of the project will repair breaches in the moat wall and strengthen the existing counterscarp. The entire project is scheduled for completion by fall 2024. Construction activity may continue to cause noise and visual impacts for day trip visitors traveling by seaplane, ferry and private boat. The park is working closely with the contractor to ensure maximum safe access to Garden Key and Fort Jefferson for all visitors. The proposed repairs and dredging are supported by construction funds allocated through Public Law 115-123 for national park units impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Dry Tortugas National Park is located about 70 miles west of Key West and encompasses seven keys, collectively known as the Dry Tortugas. Fort Jefferson, a 19th century American masonry coastal fort, was constructed in 1846 to protect shipping access to the Gulf of Mexico. Garden Key, where the fort is located, is the primary destination for people visiting the park. The 14-acre island is home to the park’s visitor center, administrative areas, docking and mooring, campground and beaches. For more information about Dry Tortugas National Park, visit nps.gov/drto or follow the park on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
