Rainbow Bike Racks Installed on Duval

October 3, 2025 - City of Key West Community Services crews were out early this morning installing brightly painted rainbow bike racks on Duval Street.

This is part of the City’s effort to support the LGBTQ+ community while complying with local and state rules. The racks, located in the 800 block of Duval, which is the epicenter of the recently proclaimed Historic Gayborhood, display the rainbow colors of the LGBTQ+ flag.

“The City of Key West has long been celebrated as a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community,” reads the proclamation, “that proudly upholds the values of individuality, freedom of expression, and unity.”

The colorful bike racks are part of a joint effort of the City and the Key West Business Guild to honor the continuing contribution of the LGBTQ+ to the cultural and economic strength of Key West.

Since the 1950s, the LGBTQ+ community has played a central and transformative role in revitalizing and sustaining Key West, especially through its contributions to tourism, the arts, culture, small business development, and civic life.

The City and the Business Guild are also working together to design a welcoming arch to the neighborhood.

“This is just the beginning,” said Business Guild Executive Director Rob Dougherty, “of a larger commitment to honoring the history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community in Key West.”
