‘ISLANDS UNDERSTAND ISLANDS’ COUNTY TO JOIN LOCAL2030 ISLANDS NETWORK OF THE UNITED NATIONS

FLORIDA KEYS, FL-- At Wednesday’s Monroe County Board of County Commissioners meeting, Monroe County Mayor Holly Merrill Raschein and Conch Republic Speaker of the House Paul Menta presented the notion of becoming a member of the Local2030 Islands Network of the United Nations. Joining the network will better position Monroe County and the Florida Keys, also affectionately known as the Conch Republic, as a global leader in sustainability and resilience to share knowledge with other like-minded island communities nationally and internationally.

The Local2030 Islands Network is the world’s first global, island-led network devoted to advancing sustainable development goals through locally driven, culturally-informed solutions that can be scaled for increased impact.

“Islands understand islands,” said Monroe County Commissioner Michelle Lincoln. “This is a great opportunity for us to share best practices with others across the world who are facing some of the issues we are having, like sea-level rise.”

Monroe County will join Local2030 through Hawaii’s hub, which represents North America, and the Blue Community Consortium, which is the major environmental stakeholders group.

Joining the network opens opportunities for international grant funding, and there is no cost to join.

They didn’t explain it at all!! They aren’t telling you that local island network is a United Nations globalist agenda. They plan to identify local goals to advance the SDGs and strengthen long-term political leadership on sustainable development and climate resilience. This will change building codes, transportation, energy and utilities, as well as commercial fishing and tourism. This will eliminate the middle class in the keys. They will say they want to save marine life while simultaneously building wind farms off the coast killing our whales and dolphins. All to satisfy sustainable development goals and sustainable tourism. This will be done under the guise of “coral restoration”. Look deeper than this fake article. Ask questions. This is BAD NEWS FOR THE KEYS!!

The UN Local2030 Initiative is a program designed to localize the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by engaging local governments (our community was left out out of this brash decision by the BOCC) to implement “sustainability” projects. While the initiative seeks to address global “challenges” at the local level, critics argue against joining or participating in such programs for several reasons:

1. Sovereignty Concerns

• Many critics argue that participation in UN-backed programs can infringe on a country’s or community’s autonomy by imposing global agendas or regulations that may not align with local priorities or values.
• Local2030’s framework is rooted in the SDGs, which many perceive as top-down mandates that do not adequately consider unique local circumstances.

2. Economic Costs

• Implementing the SDGs at the local level requires substantial investments in infrastructure, education, and environmental programs. Opponents argue that these initiatives place a financial strain on local governments and communities without guaranteed returns.
• Critics also question whether funds directed toward these goals could be better spent on more immediate, locally-determined priorities.

3. Globalist Agenda Concerns

• Skeptics of global governance view programs like Local2030 as vehicles for advancing a “globalist agenda” that undermines national identity or promotes policies that some communities may find controversial, such as aggressive and harmful climate action or economic redistribution.

4. Lack of Measurable Success

• Critics highlight that while the SDGs are ambitious, the results of UN programs are difficult to measure, appear overly idealistic or harmful to communities and the environment. Local2030 lacks accountability mechanisms to ensure tangible benefits for participating communities.

5. Bureaucratic Inefficiency

• As part of the UN, Local2030 will inherit criticisms of the broader organization, including inefficiencies, excessive bureaucracy, and slow decision-making processes that does not align with the urgency of local needs.

6. Mistrust of External Influence

• Many local leaders or community members distrust involvement with international organizations, fearing that external partners will prioritize their own interests over those of the local population. We do not want to be like Lahaina, Maui that burned to the ground due to government failures.

Conclusion

While Local2030 claims to offer opportunities for global collaboration and sustainable development, these concerns highlight the importance of aligning participation with local needs and ensuring that initiatives remain transparent, cost-effective, and respectful of community autonomy.
