Key West, FL — Daily Plan-it is pleased to announce that vendor registration is now open for its signature fall and winter markets and festivals. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, non-profits, and small businesses are invited to secure space at some of Key West’s most anticipated community gatherings.
Highlights of the upcoming season include:
Why Vendors Should Participate Daily Plan-it’s events are beloved community traditions that deliver measurable value to vendors. Each season, as many as 200 different artists, makers, crafters, culinary entrepreneurs, and non-profits showcase their work. Many vendors rely on these events as their primary source of income, while others use them as a critical way to boost seasonal revenue. To maximize vendor success, Daily Plan-it invests heavily in advertising and promotion, supported in part by grants from the Monroe County Tourist Development Council (TDC). This ensures broad exposure across digital, print, radio, and social media platforms, reaching both locals and visitors before they arrive in Key West. Coupled with Daily Plan-it’s long-standing reputation for well-managed, thoughtfully curated events, vendors can trust that each market is designed to attract strong crowds, provide a professional selling environment, and keep visitors engaged. With upwards of a half million attendees each year, vendors benefit from:
“Every purchase made at our markets directly supports a small business,” said Sean Krikorian, Event Organizer with Daily Plan-it. “For vendors, these events are not just about a single sale—they’re about building connections, exposure, and income in a marketplace where the community and visitors actively want to support them.” Vendors are encouraged to register early as space is limited and demand is high. The Key West Art & Historical Society is proud to announce the acquisition of a culturally and historically significant woodcarving, along with its original preparatory drawing, by celebrated Cuban American folk artist Mario Sanchez. The newly acquired piece, titled “The Train That Went to Sea: Cayo Paloma (Pigeon Key),” depicts a Henry Flagler Oversea Railway train crossing the original Seven Mile Bridge above Pigeon Key. This acquisition further strengthens the Society’s position as the steward of the largest public collection of Sanchez’s work, which now includes over 200 pieces ranging from preparatory paper bag sketches and handcrafted paper kites to intricately detailed bas-relief woodcarvings.
The woodcarving and its companion drawing were acquired from a private collector who had originally purchased them directly from the artist and displayed them prominently in their home for decades. Funding for the purchase came from the Society’s Acquisition Fund, established through a 2010 bequest from the Margo Golan Charitable Remainder Trust. Golan, a longtime supporter of Sanchez, created the fund to ensure the continued growth of the Society’s permanent collection, with a special focus on acquiring notable works by the artist. Sanchez, a Key West native, is among this country’s most important folk artists. A self-taught carver, he began creating his signature painted reliefs in the 1940s, chronicling everyday life in Key West of his youth. Sanchez described his humble approached with the phrase, “Se que mi modesto arte no es bueno, pero gusta,” or “I know my modest art isn’t good, but it pleases.” Today, his works are held in major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the American Folk Art Museum in New York City. “The carving spoke to me the moment I saw it,” said Dr. Cori Convertito, curator and historian for the Society. “It’s an exceptional example of Sanchez’s ability to turn everyday memories into deeply meaningful works of art. Not only does it showcase his technical mastery, but it also captures a pivotal moment in Florida Keys’ history with incredible detail. The addition of the preparatory drawing makes it even more remarkable. It’s like holding the blueprint to Sanchez’s creative process. Both will be featured in a new permanent gallery devoted to Sanchez, opening later this year at the Key West Museum of Art & History.” The newly acquired work has been digitized and is now available to view online at www.kwahs.org/collections. To learn more about the acquisition or to contribute to the Society’s Acquisition Fund, please contact Dr. Convertito at 305-295-6616 x507 or [email protected]. Stanley Santiago, M.D., FACOG KEY WEST, FL – SEPTEMBER 26, 2025 – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to focus on lifestyle and risk factors associated with breast cancer, as well the importance of breast cancer screening. Mammogram screenings are the best way for women to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before there are symptoms. However, according to the CDC, at least 25% of women ages 50-74 have not been screened for breast cancer in the past two years. Lower Keys Medical Center’s Women’s Imaging Center is scheduling mammography appointments throughout October and through the remainder of the year. Appointments may be scheduled Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday hours will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on October 4th, October 11th, and October 18th. For women of average risk, the American College of Radiology recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40. Different guidelines apply to women at higher risk. For American College of Radiology recommendations, visit acr.org. Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis. An order from a physician or qualified healthcare provider is required. All mammogram reports will be sent to the physician/provider, and the patient is responsible for follow-up. Check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage for a screening mammogram. “The first step is for women to review the guidelines for breast cancer screening, and understand if there are any factors such as a family history of breast cancer that puts them at higher risk,” said Stanley Santiago, M.D., FACOG, board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist with Keys Medical Group. “Whether starting at age 40 or earlier, a screening mammogram is one of the most important ways that women can take care of their health. The goal is to detect breast cancer at the earliest stages when it is easier to treat and before a tumor is big enough to feel or cause symptoms.” Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer. Across the U.S., 279,731 new female breast cancer cases were reported in 2022, the most recent year data is available. Women with strong family histories of breast cancer, African Americans and those of Ashkenazi Jewish descent should have a risk assessment at age 25 to see if a screening mammogram is needed before they are 40. However, Dr. Santiago says many patients develop breast cancer without substantial risk factors, which is why mammograms are so important. “About half of all breast cancer diagnoses occur in women with no risk factors other than being female and getting older”, said Dr. Santiago. “That is why creating awareness and educating women about the benefits of mammography is critical. This is a disease that has a 99% survival rate if it is found before it spreads to other parts of the body, which is why we urge all women to adhere to screening guidelines.” Dr. Santiago added that certain lifestyle factors, like maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity and limiting alcohol use can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Most health insurance plans are required to cover screening mammograms every 1 to 2 years for women beginning at age 40 with no out-of-pocket cost (like a co-pay, deductible, or co-insurance). To schedule a mammogram at the Lower Keys Medical Center Women’s Imaging Center, call (305)294-5535, extension 3308. To find a primary care physician or an OBGyn, visit LKMC.com/find-a-doctor. Lower Keys Medical Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology for Mammography.
