Boog Powell sitting for an interview behind his Key Haven home.

There’s an old saying that if you find a job you love you will never work a day in your life. Key West baseball legend John “Boog” Powell has come as close as anyone to living out that refrain. First, as a four-time all-star and American League Most Valuable Player with the Baltimore Orioles, then as owner of a Key West Marina, before finally turning to his life-long passion for BBQ. For nearly a generation, Powell has spent baseball season back in Baltimore, where his outfield BBQ restaurant is a right of passage for anyone attending an Orioles game at Camden Yards.
Powell’s understanding of business is forged from his upbringing. His father was a car salesman, the job that brought his family to Key West in the 1950’s. Boog sat down with Chamber CEO Scott Atwell to talk about his life in the business world.
