Key West Fishing
Key West is famous for its fishing.
There are more species to fish for here than in most destinations in North
America. Anglers visit the Keys from around the world to tug on a tarpon in Key
West Harbor or troll the deep blue ocean for mahi-mahi.
Key West has many types of fishing to offer. Flats, or shallow water fishing
offers a challenge to fish for tarpon, bonefish, permit, barracuda and sharks in
gin clear shallow water. Sight casting to fish makes it much more exciting. Fly
anglers especially love the challenge of casting to daisy chaining tarpon in a
few feet of water.
The offshore waters have plenty to offer all year round. Winter is terrific
for blackfin tuna, king mackerel, sailfish, amberjack, snapper and grouper.
Spring is when things really explode with big mahi-mahi in close to the reef,
sailfish migrating down the Keys, tuna are still around in the Gulf and
Atlantic, and mutton snapper and permit can be found on the wrecks and outer
bars past the reef.
Summer and Fall are terrific for marlin, mahi-mahi (dolphin), night time
fishing for snapper, and the flats are alive with bonefish and permit.
